Can you further explain article 2, chapter I of the regulation requiring weddings, funerals, and festivals to follow Vietnamese custom?
In the past, Vietnamese weddings, funerals, and festivals were not protracted, extravagant, and commercial affairs as they are now. Vietnamese customs are against these problems.
Can we stop the “superstition” which has already become indispensable to these activities?
Happy WeddingWe are focusing on propagation and encouragement of these values, instead of forbidding certain activities. We do not intervene rigidly to traditional habits; we just limit some “serious” things. The regulation is more a general direction. Local authorities will implement more detail, based on our recommendations
Two existing regulations related to this matter were signed in 1998, but the problem is still present. Can it be solved?
According to a five-year report in 2003, we have seen improvement, especially in the countryside.
How will we punish regulation violations?
There is no detailed punishment attached to the regulation. It will be based on other laws.
The regulation on organising weddings, funerals, and festivals includes 3 chapters, 16 articles.
It is offered for all Vietnamese people, but focuses on government officials and service people. Accordingly, such activities must follow Vietnamese custom, governmental officials must not attend weddings during working time, or use public property for weddings and festivals, weddings and festivals must not be used as a “business opportunity”.
